Rubbish in the city has reached a crucial point and it seems the normal resident of our city has turned a blind eye.I am constantly seeing takeaway boxes from a number of takeaway joints and shops. Airtime papers, plastics, cans, bottles, lost shoes and so much more. I would like to make an apeal to the recycling bodies in the city to educate people on the positive aspects of recycling and where they are based.
We need to have rubbish cans every 100 meters, I feel that people in Harare have become used to littering around them. We need to have a greener and safer Harare but the only problem is there is not that much awareness about preservation of the environment.
Today I had to put my chewed up apple into my bag because I could not see a bin in sight from fifth street to ninth street. I am rallying up young people to try to create a Clean up Town movement, people I urge you to do this for the love of your city and not for financial benefit. As people we can not wait for a donor to prompt us with money and a theme for us to consider the way our city looks.
In primary school, funny enough, I remember chanting about water pollution and air pollution in class but it seems that we all have left that information safely tucked at the back of our minds. I myself confess that I was one of the people who was a litter junky and I feel that I need to play my part in cleaning up the little that I can.
I urge people to look around when they are walking in town, our so called sunshine city has become a garbage fest, we can not wait for the council to get around to doing their jobs, it is our responcibility as citizens of this country to make the change needed in our homes and in our communities.
Remember the primary school lesson, maybe after chanting: air pollution, water pollution and land pollution it will dawn on us all about how important preservation of the environment is.
